4 Ways A-G Gets ATs Away From Insurance Claims & Back on the Field
Today, as more and more athletic trainers in college athletic departments across the country find themselves responsible for handling sports insurance claims, it’s not surprising many feel they’ve given up their athletic trainer responsibilities to become de facto insurance coordinators. As University of Toledo Assistant Athletic Director of Sports Medicine Brad Pierson explains, “The majority of my day-to-day has been just tracking down documentation from medical providers to make sure we can process the claim.”
This extra administrative work keeps him from focusing on student-athlete care. But with A-G on his team, he’s found that his administrative work has practically vanished, and now he’s been able to return to his primary responsibilities. Read on and watch the video above to discover what Brad experienced.
Four Ways A-G Helps ATs & College Athletic Departments With Insurance Claims
When we spoke with Brad, he told us about four important ways A-G sports insurance coverage and claims management have made a difference for his student-athletes and athletic department.
1. What Are Your Biggest Challenges As the De Facto Insurance Coordinator?
Brad’s biggest challenge is taking a student-athlete to a provider and “making sure that those bills are paid while working with primary insurance and making sure that everything that insurance needs to process a payment is getting to where it needs to be in a timely fashion.”
2. How Has A-G Helped Reduce That Challenge?
“A-G has been a great partner with this process,” Brad shares. “So when we’re taking someone to an appointment, in the past, I’ve had to track down EOBs or itemized bills or whatever it may be to process payment. Right out of the gate, A-G finds the contacts I’m already using and takes a step out of that for me.”
3. If You Had To Give Other Schools Advice on What To Look For in an Insurance Provider, What Key Element Would You Include?
According to Brad, the number one priority is customer service. “Having someone to talk to through issues and getting a quick response. A-G has been that and more.”
A-G also finds ways to process claims differently to save money. And Brad believes that A-G is good at looking at all the resources they have at Toledo and ensuring they’re using those resources to the best of their abilities.
4. How Has A-G Allowed You To Focus More on Athletic Care Rather Than Administrative Tasks?
“In the past, the majority of my day-to-day has been tracking down documentation from medical providers to make sure we can process claims,” Brad says. “My day consisted of probably 25 to 30 percent of just emails and phone calls tracking down bills.” Now, Brad shares, “I could say A-G’s probably cut that down to 5 to 10 percent of my day, maybe even less.”
Brad compares that to processing claims with their previous insurance provider. “I have claims that are still out, while A-G’s processing bills in two weeks to a month, giving me a lot more time for patient care because I’m not sitting in front of a computer. I’m not sitting on the phone.”
