In the past, if you were looking for accident and liability insurance for your camp or event, chances are you had to find different carriers to supply your coverage needs. At A-G, we didn’t think that made sense. Now, with the acquisition of eSportsInsurance in September of 2024, you can find one-stop shopping at A-G for insurance for camps that combines comprehensive accident and liability coverages. In a recent question-and-answer session, Terry Green, president of eSportsInsurance, powered by A-G Specialty Insurance, explains what this partnership offers you.
The Winning Combo: Accident & Liability Insurance for Sports Camps, Clinics, & Events
Sports camps and events need to protect not only the campers and participants in their programs but also the businesses that run the programs. Green discusses how the acquisition is uniquely positioned to meet clients’ increasing demand for protection against a broad range of liabilities.
Why did you choose to partner with A-G?
Bringing eSportsInsurance and A-G together gives clients access to a broader range of accident and liability insurance products and services. Green has known A-G Chief Executive Officer Dixon Gillis for years and worked with A-G’s TPA services on claims administration. He knows A-G runs a smooth operation. “You always look for a company that you don’t have to go to every day saying, ‘Hey, what’s going on? We’re not getting those claims paid.’ You’re always looking for that fit, for someone who can do what you want them to and provide good service. That’s what A-G has been known for, for years.”
What does eSports bring to the table as it relates to camp and clinic insurance?
While A-G Specialty Insurance is one of the largest providers of collegiate sports accident insurance across the country with unsurpassed TPA services, eSports offers property and casualty coverage. ”We bring to the table the opportunity to have one package for everything —general liability as well as accident medical policy for campers. And that’s huge because that keeps brokers from having to go to another agent to get the P&C coverage.” Property and casualty liability plans offer special event insurance, tournament insurance, summer camp insurance, and more. These liability benefits cover risks such as:
- Injuries to volunteers, visitors, and employees
- Damages to people or property
- Legal fees
- Poor employee performance or abuse
- Event cancellation
- Equipment malfunction
- Weather incidents
How have you seen this coverage and industry change over the years?
“Back in the day, guys started up businesses, or they were coaches who had camps that were just for fun,” Green says.
Today, sports camps, clinics, and events are a booming business, surpassing $4 billion in revenue. “Now, what we see are specialty camps. Quarterback camps, lineman camps, baseball pitchers’ camps … it’s gotten real specific to the position they’re playing. But the more they do, we’ve had to tailor policies to follow. That’s the biggest change we’ve seen in the industry. It’s now more specialized than it was as a general camp.”
How do you tailor policies to accommodate the varying needs of different types of camps or clinics, such as sports camps versus educational clinics?
With sports camps, Green says, “You’re looking at the inherent risk of getting hurt, so you’ve got to make sure that you provide the safety rules for these guys that are having camps, not only to protect the campers because they want to make sure that no one gets hurt at the camp, but it also educates them on what they need to do to protect themselves and their business.”
With clinics or educational-type camps, “We’ve introduced a professional-type line to cover the instructors on the things that they recommend to do.” For instance, they may be teaching a quarterback how to throw. If he gets hurt, the quarterback may say the instructor caused him to have this problem because he taught him to throw that way. Policies are now tailored to cover liability risks like these.
In the event of a claim, what support can policyholders expect to navigate the process and minimize disruption to their camp or clinic operations?
Green feels that it’s very important that an insurer doesn’t leave a client hanging when it comes to processing claims. “We know everything a client needs to get a claim processed and paid, and we provide all those tools up front.” A-G’s industry-leading digital claims processing and customer service help eliminate red tape and paperwork. And that’s important because camp administrators and managers have more important things to do with their time than manage claims.
What is something you wish camp or clinic owners understood better when it comes to their insurance coverage?
Camp and clinic owners may have started their events because they like to teach kids or have financial goals they want to meet. Often, the business part of the event may be something they don’t think about until later. They may not even realize the school, the facility, or the city/county/state where they want to hold the event may require them to have event insurance.
They need to know that it’s not just holding a clinic. Risk is involved. The insurance coverage needs to be in place to protect them. “Most don’t realize that a claim can happen until it happens, and that’s when they get in trouble,” Green says. “You want to make sure you have the insurance coverage because you don’t want someone coming after you personally.”
