Athletic directors across Division I, Division II, Division III, and NAIA schools participated in the college athlete survey and provided A-G with information about their intercollegiate sports programs.
Here’s what they told us:
- The total number of student-athletes covered ranged from 120 to 1,000.
- The average insurance premium across all divisions is $200,000.
- What the schools pay for:
- 100% said they pay for injuries
- 25% said they pay for general medical care
- 26% said they pay for prescriptions
- 16% said they pay for vision for all
- 10% said they pay for vision for some
- 3% said they pay for dental for all
- Team medical providers offer some sort of sponsorship for the athletic program in 45% of schools that responded.
- A dedicated insurance coordinator manages the insurance program for 32% of respondents, while 42% place sole responsibility on their athletic training staff.
- Mental health coverage, which recognizes the physical, academic, and mental stress student-athletes face daily, is the number one coverage schools wish they could offer.
- Nutrition is the second area of concern, understanding that student-athletes should follow a suitable diet to provide enough energy and nutrients for training, performance, and health.
- The average total cost per student-athlete is $575.
- Risk management is involved in the decision regarding coverage at 19% of institutions, and 30% include the athletics business office.
These nine insights are just a small sampling of the athletic director survey data contained in the report.
